Premier League 2026/27 – Matchweek 3
Sunday, 6 September 2026 | Emirates Stadium, London

The standout fixture of Matchweek 3 takes place at the Emirates Stadium as defending champions Arsenal host a Chelsea side that has made an explosive start under Xabi Alonso.

Both teams enter the London derby with a perfect six points from six, but they have reached that position in completely different ways. Arsenal have scored four goals without conceding; Chelsea have scored seven but allowed five. It creates a fascinating clash between Arteta's control and defensive security and Alonso's aggressive, increasingly transition-heavy Chelsea.

Current Situation

Arsenal

Arsenal have started exactly as champions would hope. They opened their title defence with a comfortable 3–0 victory over Coventry City before travelling to Aston Villa and winning 1–0, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive second-half goal.

Their league record reads:
Arsenal 3–0 Coventry City
Aston Villa 0–1 Arsenal

6 points | 4 goals scored | 0 conceded

The most impressive element is not necessarily the four goals.

It is the zero. Arteta's side have begun the season with consecutive clean sheets and have allowed neither opponent to turn matches into chaotic end-to-end contests. That continues one of Arsenal's greatest strengths from their championship-winning campaign: they are extremely difficult to force into the type of match they do not want to play.

Chelsea may represent the first opponent capable of changing that.

Chelsea

Chelsea's opening has been almost the complete opposite. They have also won twice, but their matches have produced 12 total goals. Alonso began his Premier League career with a 3–2 victory away to Fulham, with João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scoring. Chelsea then beat Brighton 4–3 at Stamford Bridge.

Their league record:

Fulham 2–3 Chelsea
Chelsea 4–3 Brighton

6 points | 7 goals scored | 5 conceded

The attacking output is impressive.
Chelsea scored after only 32 seconds against Fulham and were 3–0 ahead after 32 minutes against Brighton. That early aggression is important.

Arteta specifically highlighted Chelsea's ability to score quickly when discussing the tactical challenge ahead of Sunday's match.

The obvious problem is at the other end.

Chelsea have conceded five goals in two matches. Brighton repeatedly created opportunities during the second half at Stamford Bridge, forcing Alonso eventually to shift towards a 5-4-1 structure to protect the result. Arsenal are considerably less likely to forgive those defensive spaces.

Tactical Analysis
Arsenal's Expected Approach

Arteta will understand the danger of allowing Chelsea to establish their preferred transition rhythm.

Arsenal should therefore prioritise:
- controlling possession rather than forcing progression;
- protecting the centre immediately after losing the ball;
- positioning Saka in one-versus-one situations;
- using Ødegaard to create overloads on the right;
- attacking Chelsea's defensive width;
- generating set-piece pressure;
- preventing Palmer from receiving during transitions.

The concept of rest defence will be crucial.

When Arsenal attack, they need enough protection behind the ball to prevent Chelsea immediately releasing Palmer, Rogers or João Pedro after possession changes. This does not mean Arsenal should become conservative. It means they need to attack with structure.

Arteta's team are at their best when opponents feel under pressure without Arsenal themselves becoming exposed.

Chelsea's Expected Approach

Alonso is unlikely to attempt to dominate Arsenal through possession for 90 minutes. Chelsea's first two matches have already shown a more pragmatic side to his management.

Against Arsenal, expect them to:

- defend in a compact mid-block;
- press selected Arsenal build-up situations;
- attack rapidly after turnovers;
- use Palmer between midfield and defence;
- exploit João Pedro's movement;
- allow Rogers to carry possession through transitions;
- attack the spaces behind Arsenal's advanced full-backs.

Chelsea's attacking quality makes them dangerous even if they have considerably less possession.

That could actually suit Alonso. Trying to control Arsenal territorially at the Emirates would be extremely difficult. Allowing Arsenal possession before attacking the spaces they leave behind may offer a more realistic route.

Team News

Arsenal have defensive fitness concerns heading into the derby, with their centre-back options having been affected by recent injuries.

However, Arteta retains considerable attacking quality. Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres provide several different ways of attacking Chelsea's structure, while summer arrival Christos Tzolis adds another wide option.

Chelsea's biggest question surrounds Caicedo.

His availability could significantly influence Alonso's midfield selection, with Romeo Lavia and Reece James among the alternatives available centrally.

Alonso does at least have considerable attacking depth.

Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro have all already scored this season, while Pedro Neto also found the net against Brighton.

Betting Patterns Insights
This is perhaps the most interesting Matchweek 3 fixture from a patterns perspective.
Chelsea's two league matches have finished:
3–2
4–3

Arsenal's have finished:
3–0
1–0

Chelsea matches have averaged 6.0 total goals. Arsenal matches have averaged 2.0.

So which pattern should carry greater weight? The tactical matchup suggests Arsenal's. Chelsea's first two opponents allowed matches to become transitional. Fulham repeatedly threatened Chelsea, while Brighton created numerous second-half opportunities at Stamford Bridge. Arteta is unlikely to accept that environment. Arsenal's greatest advantage may actually be their ability to reduce the number of events in the match.

Fewer transitions. Fewer open-field attacks. Fewer defensive emergencies. If they achieve that, Chelsea's seven-goal start becomes less relevant. This is why simply backing Over 3.5 because Chelsea's opening matches contained five and seven goals would be dangerous pattern analysis.

Statistics need tactical context.

Final Verdict
Chelsea deserve considerable respect. Seven goals from their opening two Premier League matches demonstrates genuine attacking quality, and Alonso has quickly built a side capable of punishing opponents when matches become open.

But Arsenal represent an entirely different challenge. The champions have won twice without conceding and have developed one of the league's strongest structures for preventing matches from becoming chaotic. Their recent dominance of this fixture adds another reason to favour the home side.

Chelsea can score. Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro give them enough transition threat to break Arsenal's clean-sheet sequence.

The greater concern is whether they can stop Arsenal. Five goals conceded against Fulham and Brighton suggests there are still significant defensive vulnerabilities within Alonso's developing system. Arsenal are better equipped than either of those opponents to identify those spaces while simultaneously controlling the counter-attacking threat.

Expect Chelsea to make this Arsenal's hardest match of the season so far. But at the Emirates, the champions' greater defensive stability and tactical maturity should eventually make the difference.
