Premier League 2026/27 – Matchweek 4
Saturday, 12 September 2026 | Villa Park, Birmingham
Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest arrive at Matchweek 4 with the same immediate objective: finding their first Premier League victory of the season.
The mood around Villa has nevertheless improved. Unai Emery's side took only one point from their opening three league fixtures and remain without a Premier League goal, but Tuesday's 3–2 Champions League victory away to Club Brugge finally provided evidence that their rebuilt attack can function. Forest have two points from three league games, with draws against Liverpool and Tottenham following their opening defeat.
Villa Park adds another important dimension. Villa have beaten Forest in each of their last six Premier League meetings at this stadium.
Where Aston Villa Stand
Villa's domestic results make uncomfortable reading:
Brighton 4–0 Aston Villa
Aston Villa 0–1 Arsenal
Hull City 0–0 Aston Villa
That gives them one point, zero goals scored and five conceded.
The underlying attacking data is similarly weak. Villa rank 19th for expected goals at 2.6, have managed only 45 touches in the opposition penalty area, and average just 0.10 xG per shot after three league fixtures.
The draw at Hull highlighted the problem particularly clearly. Villa had plenty of the ball but struggled to turn possession into genuine danger. In fact, that match produced only their first shot on target of the Premier League season.
Tuesday in Bruges looked very different.
John McGinn, Emiliano Buendía and Nicolas Jackson all scored before half-time as Villa won 3–2, registering seven shots on target during the opening 45 minutes. That is a dramatic contrast with the single shot on target they produced across their first three league matches combined.
One European performance does not prove that Villa's domestic attacking problems have disappeared. It does, however, give Emery something tangible to build on.
Where Nottingham Forest Stand
Forest have also started slowly:
Nottingham Forest 0–1 Leeds United
Liverpool 2–2 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest 0–0 Tottenham
Their record is therefore two points, two goals scored and three conceded.
The results conceal some encouraging performances. Forest were competitive enough to earn a 2–2 draw at Anfield and came extremely close to beating Tottenham last weekend. Neco Williams appeared to have given them the lead, only for VAR to disallow the goal for handball.
Oliver Glasner's defensive organisation is beginning to become visible. The problem is what happens at the other end.
Forest have failed to score in three of their first four competitive fixtures under Glasner.
That makes this a meeting between two teams whose defensive structures currently look more reliable than their Premier League attacking numbers.
Betting Patterns Insights
The complication is Villa's performance in Bruges. Going from one shot on target across three league matches to seven in the first half of a Champions League match represents a significant attacking improvement.
Neither data point should be overinterpreted.
Villa's poor Premier League start does not make another goalless performance inevitable. Equally, scoring three times in Bruges does not mean Emery has permanently solved the attacking problem.
The first goal should tell us considerably more.
A Villa opener forces Forest to leave their preferred defensive shell eventually. A prolonged 0–0 does the opposite: it increases the pressure on the home side and makes Forest's transition game progressively more valuable.

Final Verdict
Before Tuesday night, there was little attacking evidence to justify strong confidence in Aston Villa. Their opening three Premier League fixtures produced no goals and only one shot on target.
The Club Brugge performance changes the calculation without completely overturning it.
Jackson, Buendía and McGinn all scored, and Villa finally produced sustained attacking threat rather than simply controlling possession.
Forest should be much harder to open up. Glasner has a structure capable of frustrating possession-heavy opponents, and the 2–2 result at Liverpool demonstrated that his side can compete away against strong opposition.
Villa's advantage is the combination of renewed confidence and an exceptional home record in this matchup. They have won six consecutive Premier League home meetings with Forest and demolished them 4–0 at Villa Park in May's Europa League semi-final.
It should be considerably tighter this time, but Villa have the slightly stronger case.
