Bournemouth against Liverpool carries an unusual subplot this time: Andoni Iraola returns to the Vitality Stadium for the first time as Liverpool manager, facing the club he coached for three seasons.

His successor, Marco Rose, is still searching for Bournemouth's first Premier League victory of the campaign. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain unbeaten but have drawn three of their opening four league matches. Iraola himself has acknowledged that Bournemouth know his methods extremely well — while he knows the strengths and weaknesses of their squad just as intimately.

That familiarity makes this a fascinating tactical contest.

That gives Rose momentum. It also creates Sunday's biggest potential disadvantage. Bournemouth played Thursday night in Spain. Liverpool played Tuesday night at home.

The three draws explain why nobody around Liverpool is celebrating it. After the recent draw with Fulham, Alisson openly admitted that being unbeaten with three draws was not enough for a club with Liverpool's ambitions.

That captures the early Iraola era quite well. Liverpool have not been poor.

But they have not yet consistently converted territorial superiority and attacking talent into victories. That is surprising when we consider the quality available. Alexander Isak. Bradley Barcola. Florian Wirtz. Cody Gakpo. Dominik Szoboszlai. Alexis Mac Allister.

There is enormous attacking potential here. Iraola is still working out exactly how all of it fits together.

Final Verdict
This is more difficult for Liverpool than the league table might initially suggest.

Bournemouth have not won a Premier League match under Rose, but their underlying numbers are respectable and they arrive after an historic 2–1 Europa League victory away to Real Sociedad.

Liverpool are also not yet functioning at maximum capacity. One victory and three draws from four league matches is a solid but unspectacular beginning to Iraola's tenure. Even inside the Liverpool dressing room, there is acknowledgement that the number of draws is too high.

But Sunday's circumstances favour them. Liverpool have had substantially more recovery time. Their injury situation has not worsened. Iraola knows the opposition extremely well. And the attacking combination of Isak, Wirtz, Barcola and Gakpo should become increasingly dangerous if Bournemouth's pressing intensity drops. I expect Bournemouth to make the first half uncomfortable.

They could score. They could even lead. But over 90 minutes, Liverpool's depth and freshness should begin to tell.

This looks like another match where the second half may be considerably more decisive than the first.
