Matchweek 5 begins with a West London derby that looks considerably more difficult for Chelsea than the difference in individual quality might suggest. Brentford remain unbeaten since their opening weekend, while Chelsea's explosive attack has been accompanied by persistent defensive problems.

Both teams drew 2–2 in Matchweek 4: Brentford away at Bournemouth and Chelsea unexpectedly at home to Hull City.

That result leaves an important question for Xabi Alonso. Chelsea clearly possess enough attacking quality to overwhelm opponents, but can they establish the defensive control required to turn that talent into consistent results?

Brentford are exactly the type of opponent capable of testing that weakness.

Their recent competitive form also includes a 6–1 League Cup victory over Birmingham. Brentford are not simply surviving matches.

They are extremely difficult to separate from. And that matters against a Chelsea side whose defensive structure remains vulnerable.

The attacking output is excellent. The defensive output is not. Chelsea have scored in every Premier League match and already reached double figures after four rounds.

But consider the goals conceded: 2 → 3 → 2 → 2 Chelsea have conceded at least twice in every Premier League match this season. That is now a pattern rather than an isolated bad performance.

The 2–2 draw with Hull was particularly frustrating because it followed the defeat at Arsenal and came against a newly promoted opponent at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are hoping the potential return of Moisés Caicedo can restore some midfield control.

The problem for Alonso is clear. Chelsea can create enough chances to beat almost anyone. At the moment, they also give almost anyone an opportunity to score.

Andrews does not need Brentford to dominate possession. In fact, Chelsea having more of the ball may suit them.

- using Kevin Schade's pace behind the defence;

The physical side of this matchup is important. Chelsea want technical control. Brentford want duels.
The more second balls, aerial challenges and transitional situations the match contains, the more comfortable Andrews should become.

Chelsea should control considerably more possession.

Alonso's side will attempt to:
- build patiently from defence;
- create central numerical advantages;
- find Cole Palmer between Brentford's midfield and defence;
- use Morgan Rogers to carry the ball through pressure;
- rotate João Pedro across the front line;
- create overloads before switching play;
- counter-press aggressively after possession losses.

Chelsea's attacking talent is not the concern.

Palmer, João Pedro and Rogers have already demonstrated that they can create and score at a very high level. The challenge comes immediately after possession is lost. If too many Chelsea players move ahead of the ball, Brentford can bypass the counter-press with one or two passes.

Chelsea should be favourites. Their attacking ceiling is substantially higher and Brentford's defensive injury situation is a genuine concern. But backing Chelsea outright feels unnecessarily aggressive.

Brentford have started: W – D – D – D. They are unbeaten and have scored in every Premier League match. Chelsea, meanwhile, have conceded at least twice in all four league fixtures. The recent history of this matchup strengthens the case for caution: the last three Premier League meetings at the Gtech have all ended in draws. I expect Chelsea to control possession. I expect Palmer and Rogers to create significant problems. And I expect Chelsea to score.

But I also expect Brentford to find opportunities whenever Alonso's side lose possession. This feels like another match in which Chelsea's attacking quality and defensive vulnerability pull in opposite directions. For that reason, goals look considerably more attractive than choosing the winner.
