Premier League 2026/27 – Matchweek 3
Saturday, 5 September 2026 | Craven Cottage, London

Fulham welcome Crystal Palace to Craven Cottage in a London derby carrying considerably more early-season pressure than either side would have expected.

Both clubs enter Matchweek 3 with zero points. Fulham have lost to Chelsea and Sunderland, while Palace have been beaten by Everton and Manchester City. That makes Saturday's meeting an early opportunity to reset the mood before the schedule becomes more demanding.

Current Situation

Fulham

Fulham's results have been disappointing, although their opening performance offered some encouragement.

They began the Premier League season with a 3–2 defeat against Chelsea before losing 1–0 away to Sunderland in Matchweek 2. Between those matches, Arbeloa's side recorded a comfortable 3–0 EFL Cup victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Their competitive record therefore reads:

Fulham 2–3 Chelsea
Fulham 3–0 AFC Wimbledon
Sunderland 1–0 Fulham

The concern is straightforward: Fulham need to turn competitive performances into Premier League points.

That urgency is increased by what comes next. Their following two league fixtures are against Liverpool and Manchester United, making this arguably their most accessible opportunity to establish momentum before a difficult run.

Fulham also completed significant summer changes. Seven players arrived, with Gonzalo García the headline addition, while established figures including Saša Lukić, Issa Diop, Harry Wilson and Raúl Jiménez departed.

García has already scored twice in his first three appearances, making his integration one of the encouraging aspects of Fulham's opening weeks.

Crystal Palace

Palace's start has been even more difficult.

Pierre Sage's side opened with a 2–0 defeat against Everton before Manchester City won 4–1 at Selhurst Park in Matchweek 2.

That leaves Palace with:

0 points
1 goal scored
6 goals conceded

Two matches remain a tiny sample, particularly considering Manchester City were one of the opponents, but the defensive numbers are still concerning.

The summer transfer window also brought considerable disruption. Palace retained Adam Wharton, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaïla Sarr, but Maxence Lacroix and Daniel Muñoz were among the important departures. Deadline-day additions included Dario Osorio, Ben Chilwell and Quinten Timber.

Sage therefore has a squad containing considerable talent, but integrating so many changes while simultaneously trying to establish a new tactical identity presents an obvious challenge.

Tactical Analysis
Fulham's Expected Approach

Home advantage and Palace's defensive start should encourage Arbeloa to take the initiative.

Fulham are likely to focus on:

- building patiently through midfield;
- establishing possession inside Palace's half;
- using Antonee Robinson to provide width;
- creating combinations around the penalty area;
- pressing immediately after losing possession;
- supplying García inside the box.

The key is turning possession into penetration.

Palace will probably be comfortable allowing Fulham to circulate the ball in deeper areas. Problems only emerge if Fulham consistently receive between Palace's midfield and defensive lines.

That means the movement around García could become more important than Fulham's overall possession percentage.

Crystal Palace's Expected Approach

Palace have little incentive to turn this into an open possession contest.

Their strongest route may be to allow Fulham more of the ball before attacking quickly whenever possession changes.

Expect Palace to prioritise:

- compact defensive distances;
- protecting central areas;
- using Adam Wharton to progress quickly after turnovers;
- attacking space behind Fulham's advanced full-backs;
- creating one-versus-one situations in wide areas;
- threatening through set pieces.

The biggest problem is personnel.

Palace are expected to be without Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaïla Sarr, while Chadi Riad is also unavailable.

Losing Mateta and Sarr simultaneously significantly reduces both their penalty-box presence and transition threat.

Key Tactical Battle
Fulham Possession vs Palace Transitions

Fulham should see more of the ball. Whether that actually benefits them is another question.

Palace's recent success at Craven Cottage suggests they are comfortable playing matches where Fulham are expected to take greater responsibility for possession.

That creates an interesting risk-reward calculation.

The more players Fulham commit forward, the greater their chances of breaking Palace down—but also the more transition space they potentially concede.

Palace need to exploit those moments quickly.

If Fulham lose possession and immediately recover their defensive structure, Palace's attacking limitations without Mateta and Sarr become much more noticeable.

If Palace can attack before Fulham reorganise, the picture changes considerably.

Team News

Fulham enter the match in relatively healthy condition.

Long-term absentee Tom Cairney remains unavailable with a knee injury, but otherwise Arbeloa has significant flexibility. Summer arrivals David Affengruber, Manuel Ángel and Hugo Larsson are also potential options following the closure of the transfer window.

Palace have greater concerns.

Mateta (thigh), Sarr (groin) and Riad (knee) are expected to miss the match. Several deadline-day arrivals could feature, however, including Chilwell, Timber and Osorio.

That makes Palace particularly difficult to assess.

Their starting XI may look considerably different from the side beaten by Manchester City only eight days earlier.

Match Prediction & Betting Analysis

Betting Patterns Insights
This fixture presents an interesting conflict between current form and historical matchup.

Current form favours Fulham slightly. Palace have conceded six goals in two matches and arrive with important attacking absences. Fulham also have home advantage and produced five goals across their first three competitive fixtures.

But the head-to-head evidence points strongly in the opposite direction. Palace have repeatedly produced results at Craven Cottage and have won three consecutive competitive visits. That makes a straight Fulham win less attractive than the surface-level situation might suggest.

There is another factor: both teams need points.

At 0–0, particularly during the first half, neither manager needs to panic. But if the match remains level deep into the second half, the incentive to take greater risks increases. That could make the final 30 minutes considerably more open than the first 60.

Final Verdict
Neither team has started the season as planned, making this London derby more significant than a normal Matchweek 3 fixture.

Fulham appear to have the stronger immediate position. They are at home, their injury situation is considerably healthier and Palace arrive after conceding four against Manchester City.

But Palace's record in this fixture cannot simply be ignored. They have not lost at Craven Cottage in more than two decades, have won their last three competitive visits and even defeated Fulham during pre-season. The absence of Mateta and Sarr, however, changes the attacking equation considerably.

Fulham should control more of the match and create the greater volume of opportunities. Palace remain dangerous enough in transition to prevent this becoming comfortable, but the hosts have a genuine opportunity to finally break their poor Craven Cottage sequence against the Eagles.
