Premier League 2026/27 – Matchweek 4
Sunday, 13 September 2026 | Coventry Building Society Arena | 14:00 BST
Coventry City enter Matchweek 4 still searching for both their first Premier League point and first Premier League goal since promotion. Three matches have produced three defeats, but Frank Lampard's side showed enough at Manchester City last weekend to suggest their record may look worse than their performances.
Brighton arrive in a very different position. Fabian Hürzeler's side have collected four points from three matches, including a spectacular opening victory over Aston Villa, but their start has also exposed considerable defensive volatility and they remain without an away win.
This creates an intriguing matchup: a Coventry side desperate for a breakthrough against a technically superior Brighton team weakened by a substantial injury list.
Where Coventry City Stand
Coventry's Premier League results:
Arsenal 3–0 Coventry City
Coventry City 0–1 Hull City
Manchester City 1–0 Coventry City
Their record:
0 points | 0 goals scored | 5 conceded
At first glance, the numbers are extremely poor. Three games. Three defeats. No goals.
Only Fulham joined Coventry in entering this weekend without a Premier League point, while Lampard's side risk becoming only the second Coventry team ever to begin a league campaign with four consecutive defeats, after the 1919/20 side. However, there is an important distinction between Coventry's opening two matches and what happened at the Etihad.
Against Manchester City, Coventry were competitive. Erling Haaland's first-half header proved decisive, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was required to make several saves and Coventry had opportunities to equalise, including promising chances for substitutes Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms.
Losing 1–0 away to Manchester City is not the type of performance that should create panic. The question now is whether Coventry can turn improvement into goals.
Where Brighton Stand
Brighton's opening results:
Brighton 4–0 Aston Villa
Chelsea 4–3 Brighton
Brighton 1–1 Leeds United
Their record:
4 points | 8 goals scored | 5 conceded
That immediately highlights the difference between these teams. Coventry have scored zero. Brighton have scored eight. The Seagulls produced one of the most impressive performances of Matchweek 1 when they dismantled Aston Villa 4–0. They then contributed to a chaotic seven-goal match at Stamford Bridge before drawing 1–1 with Leeds last weekend.
Jack Hinshelwood has started particularly well and enters the weekend as Brighton's leading league scorer with two goals. Brighton's problem is not attacking production. It is consistency. Hürzeler's team can look excellent when their press functions and they establish territorial control. When opponents successfully bypass that first pressure, however, Brighton can leave substantial space behind it.
Chelsea exploited precisely that vulnerability. Coventry will have noticed.
Betting Patterns Insights
Coventry's league sequence is extraordinary:
0–3
0–1
0–1
Every match has gone Under 3.5 Goals. Two of three have gone Under 1.5. Coventry have conceded only two goals across their last two matches, despite one of those fixtures being away to Manchester City. That tells us something important. Their problem is increasingly at the other end.
Brighton's sequence is almost the opposite:
4–0
3–4
1–1
That is: 8 goals → 7 goals → 2 goals in total match scoring. The dramatic reduction is interesting from a pattern perspective. But rather than blindly expecting another low-scoring match, we need to understand why. Brighton's attacking options are currently reduced by injuries.
Coventry's defensive structure has improved. And the hosts desperately need a result. Those factors all suggest a more controlled match than Brighton's early-season reputation might imply.

Final Verdict
The league table makes this look straightforward. Brighton have four points and eight goals. Coventry have zero points and zero goals. But the matchup is closer than those numbers suggest. Coventry were much improved at Manchester City and forced Donnarumma into meaningful work despite eventually losing 1–0. Brighton remain the technically stronger side, but Hürzeler is dealing with a significant injury list. Mitoma, Minteh, Wieffer, Ferguson and several others are unavailable, although Rutter and Azeez could return.
That reduces my confidence in a straightforward Brighton victory. I expect Coventry to produce their strongest home performance of the season so far. More importantly, I think their three-match scoring drought ends here. Brighton should still create enough to score themselves, particularly as the match opens during the second half. But Coventry have lost narrowly in consecutive matches, and there are enough signs of improvement to believe their first Premier League point could be close.
