Fulham and Manchester United arrive at Craven Cottage under pressure for different reasons. Álvaro Arbeloa is still searching for his first Premier League victory as Fulham manager, while Michael Carrick's United have won only once in their opening four league matches and have subsequently suffered consecutive defeats against Manchester City and Brighton.

Yet there are signs of improvement at Fulham. A 0–0 draw away to Liverpool was comfortably their strongest league result so far, and they followed it by beating West Ham 3–2 in the Carabao Cup. United's trajectory has moved in the opposite direction: after losing the Manchester derby 1–0, they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3–2 against Brighton in midweek.

This therefore feels considerably closer than the club names might initially suggest.

The headline is obviously negative. D – L – L – L is not the start Arbeloa wanted. But the sequence matters. Fulham's first three league games exposed major defensive problems. They conceded seven times and repeatedly struggled to control transitions.

Then they went to Anfield and kept Liverpool scoreless. That represented a significant tactical improvement. Fulham were more compact, protected the centre more effectively and showed they can defend against high-level attacking opposition when the distances between their lines remain controlled.

They then scored three at West Ham in the cup. So despite having only one Premier League point, the last two performances provide genuine reasons for optimism.

The Ipswich victory increasingly looks like the exception. United have failed to win their other three Premier League matches. More concerning is what followed the Manchester derby.

Against Brighton in the Carabao Cup, United established a 2–0 lead at Old Trafford and still lost 3–2. It was the first time in 50 years that United had lost at home after leading by two goals.
That creates a psychological question as well as a tactical one.

United have quality. The problem is controlling matches.

Final Verdict
Manchester United's long-term record against Fulham is excellent: just one defeat in the last 21 Premier League meetings and no league defeat at Craven Cottage since 2009.

But this preview should not be built around history alone. Current form tells a different story. Fulham have just kept Liverpool scoreless at Anfield and followed it with a cup victory over West Ham. United have lost to Manchester City and Brighton in consecutive matches, with the Brighton defeat particularly damaging because Carrick's side surrendered a 2–0 advantage. I expect United to have periods where their attacking quality is obvious.

Bruno Fernandes remains the player most capable of unlocking the match, while Mbeumo and Cunha give them dangerous movement around the final third. But Fulham should create chances too.

Their pressing, home advantage and ability to attack quickly through King, Bobb and Iwobi are particularly relevant against this United side. This feels like another difficult afternoon for Carrick rather than the beginning of an immediate turnaround.
