Leeds United have been one of the early surprises of the Premier League season. Daniel Farke's side enter Matchweek 5 unbeaten, third in the table and with eight points from four matches, fresh from an emphatic 4–1 victory over Newcastle United.

Crystal Palace present a very different puzzle. Pierre Sage's side have collected only three league points and conceded 11 goals, yet those numbers arguably make their start look worse than some of the performances have been. More importantly, Palace arrive at Elland Road immediately after a confidence-boosting 4–0 Europa League victory over Lech Poznań.

This therefore looks much closer than third versus 16th might suggest.

Only Arsenal and Manchester City had collected more points after the first four matches, while this represents Leeds' strongest start to a top-flight campaign since 2001/02.

But the Newcastle performance was the one that really changed the conversation around Farke's side. Leeds did not simply edge the game. They overwhelmed Newcastle during the first half, established a commanding advantage and eventually won 4–1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was among the scorers before Noah Okafor added another in the second half.

After four matches, Leeds are therefore not merely surviving. They are competitive.

Leeds' Defensive Improvement

Perhaps the most impressive number is at the other end.

Three goals conceded in four matches. Leeds have already kept two clean sheets and have conceded more than once in none of their Premier League fixtures.

That consistency matters. Farke has found a structure capable of protecting the penalty area without completely sacrificing attacking ambition. Leeds are averaging only around 44% possession, demonstrating that they do not require control of the ball to control the match.

That could be particularly useful against Palace.

Those are concerning defensive numbers. Only one victory. No clean sheets. At least two goals conceded in every Premier League match. But there is more context than the table provides.

Farke himself pointed out that Palace created enough opportunities to get something from the Everton match, while their defeat to Ipswich was heavily influenced by an early red card. Their season therefore should not be interpreted simply as four poor performances.

The defensive instability is real. But so is the attacking threat.

Final Verdict
The league table suggests Leeds should be clear favourites. The actual matchup is more complicated.

Leeds deserve enormous credit for their start: eight points, no defeats and only three goals conceded. Their 4–1 victory against Newcastle was the strongest evidence yet that this team can do more than simply survive in the Premier League. Palace's league results are poor. Three points. Three defeats. Eleven goals conceded.

But there are signs that Sage's team are better than those numbers. They scored three at Fulham, played much of the Ipswich defeat with ten men and then responded by beating Lech Poznań 4–0 in Europe. That makes me reluctant to predict a comfortable Leeds victory.

Palace should create chances. But Leeds have the home advantage, significantly more recovery time and the more stable defensive structure.

I expect Palace to make this difficult. I also expect Calvert-Lewin and Leeds' physicality to become increasingly influential as the match progresses.

The most plausible outcome is therefore a competitive Leeds victory rather than another 4–1.
