Manchester City welcome newly promoted Coventry City to the Etihad Stadium in what appears, on paper, to be one of the most uneven contests of Matchweek 3.

City have made a perfect start to the post-Pep Guardiola era under Enzo Maresca, collecting six points from their opening two matches and scoring six goals. Coventry's return to the Premier League has been considerably more difficult: Frank Lampard's side have lost both matches and are still searching for their first league goal of the campaign.

Manchester City's transition from Guardiola to Maresca could hardly have started better.

City also completed an extraordinary summer transfer window. Their headline deadline-day addition was Enzo Fernández, while Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye were among the other significant arrivals.

That gives Maresca considerable depth ahead of a season in which City will again compete across multiple competitions.

Coventry City

Coventry's return to the Premier League has provided an immediate reminder of the difference between Championship and top-flight football.

The Sky Blues opened against defending champions Arsenal and suffered a 3–0 defeat. Their Matchweek 2 fixture appeared considerably more manageable, but Hull City left the Coventry Building Society Arena with a 1–0 victory.

Manchester City should win this match. The difference in individual quality is substantial, but the tactical matchup is arguably even more concerning for Coventry.

Lampard's side have failed to score in their opening two Premier League matches and now face a City team that has started the Maresca era with six points and six goals. Coventry can make the opening stages uncomfortable by defending deep and maintaining compact distances, but doing that successfully for 90 minutes is another matter.

City possess too many attacking solutions. Haaland provides the penalty-box threat. Cherki can unlock compact spaces. Foden offers movement between the lines, while the summer additions give Maresca considerable options from the bench.

Coventry's objective should be to remain competitive rather than attempting to match City territorially.
