Premier League 2026/27 – Matchweek 4
Sunday, 13 September 2026 | Old Trafford | 16:30 BST
The first Manchester derby of the season arrives with the two clubs in very different positions. Manchester City have made a perfect Premier League start under Enzo Maresca and followed it with victory in Europe. Manchester United have been far less convincing domestically, although Thursday's emphatic Champions League win gives Michael Carrick's side an important confidence boost before their biggest examination of the season so far.
Yet the league table does not tell the whole story. United's record at Old Trafford throughout 2026 has been excellent, while Carrick has already demonstrated that his transition-based football can cause City serious problems.
Where Manchester United Stand
United's Premier League results:
Hull City 2–0 Manchester United
Manchester United 5–2 Ipswich Town
Everton 2–2 Manchester United
Their record: 4 points | 7 goals scored | 6 conceded
The opening defeat at Hull was a major disappointment. United responded impressively against Ipswich, scoring five at Old Trafford, but then surrendered another opportunity to build momentum when Everton scored late to earn a 2–2 draw.
So the early picture is mixed. United can score. They can create. But they remain too easy to hurt defensively. Thursday offered a significant confidence boost. Carrick's side beat Sabah 4–0 in the Champions League, meaning they enter the derby having scored nine goals across their last three competitive matches.
More importantly, Carrick was able to protect Marcus Rashford, keeping him unused in Europe specifically with the derby in mind. United therefore enter Sunday in better condition than their league position initially suggests.
Where Manchester City Stand
City's Premier League results:
Manchester City 2–1 Bournemouth
Crystal Palace 1–4 Manchester City
Manchester City 1–0 Coventry City
That gives them: 9 points | 7 goals scored | 2 conceded
Three games. Three victories. Maresca could hardly have asked for a better results-based start to the post-Guardiola era. City then travelled to Porto in the Champions League and won 2–0, extending their perfect competitive start.
Their last three results across competitions are therefore:
4–1
1–0
2–0
Seven goals scored. One conceded. The interesting point is that City have not necessarily played perfect football. Their 1–0 victory over Coventry was considerably less convincing than the Palace performance, while Maresca is still integrating an expensive collection of new players. But good teams often develop while winning. City are doing exactly that.
Betting Patterns Insights
United's three matches average 4.33 total goals. City's average 3.0. But there is another interesting pattern. United have conceded exactly two goals in all three Premier League matches. City have scored in every competitive match. At the same time, United have scored seven league goals and four more in Europe this week.
That makes simply backing City to win less attractive than targeting goals There is also the derby effect. The last three league meetings produced:
2–0
3–0
0–0
So recent Manchester derbies have actually been less explosive than the two teams' current attacking profiles might suggest. This is precisely why context matters more than blindly following historical totals.

Final Verdict
City deserve to be favourites. They have won all three Premier League matches and followed that with a 2–0 Champions League victory in Porto. Opta's current model gives City a 45.1% probability of winning, compared with 30.6% for United. But those numbers also demonstrate that this is not viewed as a routine City victory.
Old Trafford matters. United have won nine of their last ten Premier League home games in 2026, and Carrick's transition-based attack is stylistically capable of exploiting the spaces City's possession structure can create. There is also the previous derby.
Carrick's United beat City 2–0 here in January. I expect Maresca to control more possession. I expect City to create more sustained pressure. But I also expect United to create some of the match's clearest opportunities through transitions. The decisive difference may come late.
City have more recovery time after Europe, greater midfield depth and Haaland provides them with a goalscorer capable of converting a relatively small number of opportunities. United should score. I simply think City score one more.
