Newcastle United desperately need a response after their unbeaten start ended with a 4–1 defeat at Leeds, but the fixture is considerably more difficult than it might have appeared before the season began.

Hull City arrive at St James' Park fourth in the Premier League and unbeaten after four matches, with eight points and only two goals conceded. Newcastle, meanwhile, have five points and have conceded eight.

That creates an intriguing situation: Newcastle have the greater individual quality and home advantage, but Hull have been the far more stable team.

Then came Elland Road. Leeds scored three times during a devastating 14-minute spell before half-time. An own goal from Lewis Miley was followed by Jayden Bogle and Dominic Calvert-Lewin strikes, before Noah Okafor made it 4–0 after the interval. Bazoumana Touré's 90th-minute goal was merely a consolation. Newcastle managed seven attempts compared with Leeds' 15 and only 18 touches in the opposition box compared with Leeds' 30.

It was their first genuinely poor Premier League performance under Jaissle. The question now is how they respond.

That is an extraordinary return for a promoted side. W – W – D – D.

More importantly, Hull's performances suggest this is not simply an early-season statistical accident. They kept clean sheets in their opening three Premier League matches before finally conceding at Chelsea. Even then, Jakirović's side recovered from going 1–0 down to lead 2–1 and had opportunities to win before João Pedro equalised.

Chelsea produced only 0.89 xG despite dominating possession, while Hull repeatedly threatened on transitions.

The promoted side therefore arrive at St James' Park with legitimate confidence.

Final Verdict
This is much closer than the club names suggest. Hull have been one of the biggest surprises of the opening month. Eight points from four matches. Unbeaten. Only two goals conceded.

They have already beaten Manchester United and taken a point at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle, meanwhile, need a response after the 4–1 defeat at Leeds and must produce it with a depleted squad. Elanga, Dedić and Ramsey are confirmed out, while other important players remain unavailable.

St James' Park prevents me from leaning too far towards Hull. Newcastle still possess Wissa, Barnes, Hall and Fernandez-Pardo, and their attacking ceiling is higher. But I do not trust them enough defensively to predict a comfortable victory.

I expect Newcastle to have more possession. I expect Hull to defend deep and frustrate them. And I expect the visitors to create several dangerous transition opportunities.

Newcastle may produce the reaction Jaissle wants. But Hull look organised enough to leave St James' Park with something.
