Sunderland welcome the defending champions to the Stadium of Light with enough evidence from the opening weeks to believe they can make this uncomfortable. Régis Le Bris' side have recovered from their opening defeat with four points from two league matches and a midweek cup victory. Arsenal, however, arrive with a perfect competitive record and are chasing a fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

There is also unfinished business from last season. Sunderland held Arsenal to a dramatic 2–2 draw at the Stadium of Light, scoring late to deny Mikel Arteta's team victory. Arteta has explicitly referenced that match this week, saying Arsenal learned from dropping those points.

They followed the Brentford draw by beating Hull City 1–0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. The consistency of Sunderland's scorelines is striking. They have scored exactly once in each of their three Premier League matches. Defensively, they have also become progressively more controlled after conceding twice at Ipswich.
That is consistent with Le Bris' broader approach. Sunderland can change between a back three and back four, protect central spaces and compete physically without abandoning their ability to progress possession.
They also have confidence at home. Last season's seventh-place finish was built partly around an excellent Stadium of Light record, and they have already beaten Fulham there this season. Arsenal will therefore encounter a considerably tougher environment than Sunderland's status might initially suggest.

Then came Wednesday's Champions League trip to Napoli. Arsenal won 1–0, with Martin Ødegaard scoring the decisive second-half goal. Across their major competitive fixtures this season, Arsenal have therefore beaten Manchester City, Coventry, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Napoli.
Five matches. Five victories. Even more impressive is the defensive record: only Chelsea have scored against them.
The 2–1 victory over Chelsea also demonstrated something different. Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an extremely early lead, but Arsenal remained composed and responded through Kai Havertz and Ødegaard rather than allowing the match to become chaotic.
That capacity to win different types of matches is one of the clearest signs of a mature title-winning team.
Team News

Sunderland remain without Habib Diarra, who is expected to miss several weeks with a thigh injury. Romaine Mundle is another confirmed absentee.

Le Bris otherwise has most of his principal options available, including Xhaka, Le Fée, Angulo and Brobbey.

Arsenal's major absence remains William Saliba, whose back injury is expected to keep him out until at least November.

Timber and Mosquera remain fitness questions, although Arteta has enough defensive alternatives to avoid forcing either player back prematurely.

The champions also came through Wednesday's Champions League match without a major new injury concern.

Final Verdict
Sunderland should not be underestimated. Four points from their last two Premier League matches, consecutive home victories across competitions and last season's 2–2 draw against Arsenal provide enough evidence that this could become uncomfortable.

But Arsenal currently look exceptionally mature. They have won their first three league matches, beaten Chelsea after falling behind and then travelled to Napoli and won 1–0 in Europe.

The champions are not simply scoring more goals than opponents. They are controlling the conditions in which matches are played. That makes them particularly difficult to oppose. I expect Sunderland to defend well enough to keep the match competitive, especially during the first half.

Eventually, however, Arsenal's technical quality and squad depth should produce the decisive moments. It may not be spectacular. It may not be comfortable.

But this Arsenal team increasingly look capable of winning precisely those types of matches.
