Few would have expected Tottenham and Aston Villa to enter Matchweek 5 without a Premier League victory between them. Spurs have two points and, remarkably, still have not scored a league goal. Villa have only one point and finally ended their own league scoring drought last weekend — but still lost 2–1 at home to Nottingham Forest.

That makes this much more than an ordinary early-season fixture. Both managers need a result, both attacks are under scrutiny, and the first goal could dramatically alter the psychology of the afternoon.

Their record: 2 points | 0 goals scored | 5 conceded The defensive improvement is obvious.

After conceding five goals in their opening two matches, Spurs have kept consecutive league clean sheets.

But the attacking numbers are extraordinary. Four matches. Zero goals. Tottenham have failed to score in their opening four league games for the first time in club history.

Against Everton, they produced 14 attempts but seriously tested Jordan Pickford only once. De Zerbi admitted that Spurs were reaching promising positions but making poor decisions in the final third.

The underlying numbers reinforce his assessment. Tottenham lead the Premier League with 46 completed take-ons and have recorded 34 high turnovers, yet only two of those high turnovers have ended with a shot. They are also averaging almost four touches in the opposition penalty area for every shot they take there — the highest figure in the league.

In simple terms:

Tottenham are getting into attacking positions without turning those positions into attempts.

That is different from creating nothing.

But until the final action improves, the result is the same.

Their record: 1 point | 1 goal scored | 7 conceded Villa finally scored their first league goal against Forest. Unfortunately for Emery, it still produced no points. Forest won 2–1 at Villa Park, their first victory there in 32 years.

There are at least signs that Villa's attack is beginning to wake up. They beat Club Brugge 3–2 away in the Champions League, then defeated Coventry 3–1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Their recent sequence across all competitions is therefore: 0–0 → 3–2 → 1–2 → 3–1

That is a meaningful change from the sterile performances of August.

Villa's problem is transferring that attacking improvement into Premier League points.

The Under 3.5 Goals market has landed in six of those eight. Tottenham's last three league games have all gone Under 2.5. They have also now kept consecutive clean sheets. Villa, meanwhile, finally broke their scoring drought against Forest. There is another fascinating sequence.

Both teams have produced extremely volatile attacking patterns rather than consistent scoring. That makes blindly extrapolating their season averages dangerous.

Final Verdict
This is extremely difficult to call. Tottenham have home advantage and their underlying attacking numbers suggest the goalless run cannot continue indefinitely. Porro's return helps. Maddison's improving fitness helps. And Villa arrive with significant defensive absences.

But there is not enough evidence yet to trust Tottenham as a straightforward home-win selection. Villa have also shown genuine attacking improvement outside the Premier League, scoring three at Club Brugge and another three at Coventry. There is one unusual historical statistic working against my instinct: none of the last 22 Premier League meetings between these teams has finished level.

Eventually, however, every sequence ends. I expect Tottenham finally to score their first Premier League goal of the season. I also think Villa have enough transition threat to exploit a Spurs side that will be under enormous pressure to attack at home. The opening hour could be cautious. The final half-hour should be much more interesting.
