Manchester United (officially Manchester United Football Club) is an English professional football club based at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester. Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902.

Manchester United is one of the most successful football clubs in English history in terms of major trophies. Over the last two decades, it established itself as the most successful club in England. Since October 1986, when Sir Alex Ferguson became manager, the team has won 38 major trophies.

In 1968, Manchester United became the first English club to win the European Cup, defeating Portuguese side Benfica 4–1 in the final.

In 1999, the club won the UEFA Champions League for the second time, defeating Bayern Munich 2–1 in the final. In 2008, United claimed Europe's premier club trophy for the third time by beating Chelsea in the Champions League final.

During the 2010–11 season, Manchester United won the English league title for a record 19th time, surpassing Liverpool's previous record. The club secured its 20th league title in the 2012–13 season. In addition, Manchester United has won the FA Cup 12 times, making it the second most successful club in the competition's history after Arsenal.

In May 2015, Forbes ranked Manchester United as the third most valuable football club in the world, valuing the club at more than US$3.1 billion.

In 2000, Manchester United was ranked second in FIFA's list of the greatest football clubs of the 20th century.
